Here are 10 issues that can stop your Dyson from working properly that can easily be resolved.
1. Not picking up through the hose
If your Dyson won’t pick up using the hose check to make sure that there is nothing blocking the hose. Picking up smaller objects can prevent this from happening again in the future.
2. Blocked cleaner head (brushes)
A blocked cleaner head can be fixed by carefully removing the blockage. Hair, string and other items are usually to blame. It might be time to replace the cleaner head if it looks worn out, or isn’t as effective even after you have removed the blockage.
3. Turns itself off
If your Dyson turns itself off it is usually a sign that it is overheating. This can be caused by a blockage or dirty filters. It is straightforward to check for a blockage or change dirty filters. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, then it may mean that the motor is worn out.
4. Not picking up
After a while you might find that your Dyson is not picking up. This is usually caused by blocked filters. It is important to check both the pre and post motor filters. Clean or replace them as necessary.
5. Burning smell
If your Dyson is emitting a burning smell, it might mean that you may need to replace the motor.
6. Won’t stand up
If your Dyson will not stand up, then the mechanism has come out of alignment, and can be resolved quickly and easily.
7. Clattering sound
If your hear your Dyson making a clattering sound it is usually because there is something caught in the brush bar. Cleaning the brush bar will normally resolve this. If it doesn’t, then it could indicate a clutch problem.
8. Intermittently cuts out
A Dyson that intermittently cuts out usually points to a power cable problem. Vacuum cleaner power leads have hard lives as they are unwound, stretched during use and then wound away in the same position. Not to mention the fact that they often get caught on furniture and under doors. It is recommended that the power cable is completely replaced, rather than shortened and reattached.
9. Burning rubber smell
If you can smell burning rubber this often indicates a brush roll and belt problem. By having a look, you will be able to tell what the problem is and what needs replacing.
10. General observations
If you have had your Dyson a while, and have never cleaned the filters, or cleaned the brush head, perhaps now is a good time to take a look and see if the power cable is wearing out, or the filters are dirty. You can replace the parts as necessary, and not be without the use of your Dyson. Prevention is better than cure.
